Even as vaccines continue to roll out, surviving COVID-19 still feels uncertain for some. COVID-19 is a serious disease that can have long-lasting effects on its victims, and even if you’ve survived the disease itself, adjusting to a socially distanced lifestyle is a whole other challenge.
The pandemic has also had a powerful impact on mental health. In June 2020, symptoms of anxiety disorder and depression increased considerably in the U.S. compared to 2019.
It may seem like a scary time, but you definitely aren’t alone. Here, we’ll break down the steps you can take to survive the COVID-19 pandemic and stay sane while doing it.
1. Wear a Mask (and Keep Doing It)
We know you’ve probably heard this a million times already, but the easiest way to prevent the continued spread of the coronavirus is by wearing a mask. The importance of wearing a mask really can’t be overstated.
Even as the population of vaccinated people increases, wearing a mask is the simplest way to guarantee that you stay safe and healthy. The CDC recommends that even once you’ve been fully vaccinated, you should still wear a mask while out in public and in gatherings of other unvaccinated individuals.
2. Stay Connected
Loneliness has had a major impact on many people over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. Coping with loneliness feels particularly overbearing when social distancing guidelines are still in place.
However, there are still ways of staying connected with your friends and family during the pandemic. Schedule weekly phone calls or Zoom calls so you always have a little social activity to look forward to.
3. Stay Sane
If you’ve been stuck at home like most of us have for the past year or so, not having the same freedom to go out and about our lives like we used to can put a major strain on our mental health in other ways.
Aside from staying connected to friends and family, ensure you’re finding new ways to connect with yourself. Check out a hiking trail you might not have been to before. This is a great opportunity to pick up some new skills and hobbies – maybe even start a virtual book club with your friends!
4. Stay Healthy
Obviously, one of the best things that you can do to survive COVID-19 is to continue to do your best to stay healthy. Even though you should probably still avoid gyms, it’s a great idea to exercise either in your home or outside if the weather is nice.
Try cooking some new healthy recipes for a fun way to learn new skills and practice healthy eating. It’s also a good idea to watch your intake of less healthy things, like sugar, caffeine, alcohol, and other drugs.
5. Stay Hopeful
One of the best things that you can do in coping with COVID is to stay in the present. Getting too ahead of yourself and trying to look into the future can cause you to panic and you don’t want that.
However, don’t forget that there is an end in sight! There are many things to look forward to once the pandemic ends that can give you the power to stay strong.
Getting Through the COVID-19 Pandemic
Fortunately, as the COVID-19 vaccines continue to roll out, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Take a deep breath and remember that this won’t last forever.
With these 5 tips, you hopefully have the tools you need to make living through this pandemic a little bit more bearable. Together, we will make it through this.
