Creativity is one of the most intangible yet coveted skills out there.
I could wax poetic about the amazing world of creativity and how creative people are intrinsically motivated, independent, and aspirational. In fact, kids raised to exercise their creativity from a young age grew up to be more successful, well-rounded adults.
Want to learn how you can implement the power of creativity into your daily routine? Read on.
Start Small
Don’t discount the small ways to be creative and how much of a difference they can make to your physical and mental well-being. Here are some ideas if you’re trying to learn how to be more creative:
- Color: Whether you doodle, draw, or sketch, coloring is proven to be one of the most therapeutic activities out there. Grab your adult coloring book for some structure, or simply use your crayons and markers to unleash the creativity within you.Â
- Learn a new skill:Â Take a class or workshop to get a creative outlet, or simply teach yourself. Photography, knitting, learning an instrument, cooking… these are all transformational activities that impact all facets of our lives.
- Do something you’ve always wanted to do:Â Often, our inner creativity is just waiting to come out, but our rational mind suppresses the desire for spontaneous fun. Take that trip, visit that museum, and spend your time getting to know yourself. Feelings of happiness, excitement, and invigoration will allow your creative tank to fill up and apply to other aspects of your life.
Take some time off Netflix, family, and work obligations and get in the present moment to reap the positive benefits of creativity.
Apply the Mindset
Now take your new creative thinking and apply that mindset to your career. Creativity is an essential transferrable skill—you may find yourself with a renewed passion, increased work ethic, and genuine excitement for the work you do.
Fueling up on creativity is beneficial because the quality of your work and overall output will improve. Maybe that means better boardroom presentations or quality client pitches. Maybe your solutions and problem-solving win you accolades at work. Either way, simple creative activities like knitting, coloring, or alone time allow our mind to switch on and exercise critical thinking at our day-to-day tasks, including work.
Improve Everyday
Like any other skill, you’re going to have to work hard to get better. Creativity takes practice, so develop the ‘expert mindset’. Getting an in-depth knowledge of your creative skill will allow for innovative thinking.
Take risks by exploring that which you haven’t before. When your risks take off, remember to reward yourself! Give in to your innate curiosity and allow yourself the opportunity to explore new avenues and streams of thought—whether it’s at work, or in life.
