You want to put your best foot forward that job interview is coming up. Maybe it’s been a while since you’ve been interviewed, or you’ve had a bad interview experience.
Whatever the reason is, you need some interviewing tips. I’ve compiled the top ten ways to improve your next job interview.
10 Interviewing Tips to Put You Ahead of the Competition
It could be weeks, days, or minutes before your following interview, but there’s no need to panic. These interview strategies will help you feel more prepared and set you apart from the other applicants.
1. Take It Seriously
Just starting to research the best interview techniques means you understand the importance of this tip. If you approach an interview as a chore, an insult, or unimportant, the interviewer will pick up on it.
2. Do Your Research
You might have submitted several resumes or CVs at a time and lost track of which company has reached out for an interview. Check out the company website, LinkedIn, or Facebook account. This will give you an idea of what they create, value, and how you might make an integral part of the team.
3. Practice Makes Perfect
There are lots of sites that offer examples of the most common interview questions. Put together a list, and practice your answers in front of a mirror or record yourself so you can see how you come across. Don’t forget to have an answer for the dreaded “What’s your greatest weakness?” question.
4. Come Up With Your Questions
Most interviewers ask at the end if you have any questions about the job or the company. Once you’ve done your research (see Number 2), come up with some good questions.
Some good examples are what they expect from an employee, how they evaluate good work, and how they expect departments to collaborate.
Asking questions shows the interviewer that you are interested in the company and makes a good impression.
5. If It’s Virtual: Know How to Join the Video Call
More companies are choosing to conduct interviews virtually, and it’s important to know how to use the program they will be using. Enlist a friend to set up a meeting from their device so you can become acquainted with the features and prompts. You can’t give a great interview if you can’t join the call.
6. The Resume
Update your resume. If the interview is in person, print out a clean copy and have it ready to present to the interviewer.
7. Know Your Strengths
This may be less known, but it is one of the most critical interview strategies. Review your body of work on your resume and evaluate what made you good at each past job.
Knowing your strengths, you can better answer the interviewer’s situational questions.
8. Look Your Best
Put some thought into what to wear to an interview. Your appearance will reflect your importance in the interview, whether it is a corporate job or construction.
9. You’re on Display
From the moment you walk into the building or click “join,” assume you are being evaluated. Be respectful and kind to the people with whom you interact.
10. During the Interview
In the interview, set your phone on an airplane or silent mode. Any call, text, or notification you might receive can wait until you finish.
Keep your head up and shoulders back. This exhibits confidence and professionalism. You don’t need to maintain eye contact for the entire interview, but be sure to keep your face turned in the general direction of the interviewer so you don’t come off as easily distracted or bored.
