Administrative Professionals’ Day always falls on the Wednesday of the last full week of April. In 2022, that’s April 27.
On this day, we celebrate everyone who makes an office run smoother:
- Secretaries
- Administrative assistants
- Receptionists
- Personal assistants
- Anyone who carries out the day-to-day operations in an office
There are over 3 million administrative professionals in America alone; each is the heart and soul of every business. They answer phones, keep records, manage calendars, and keep everyone else sane. Show your appreciation for their behind-the-scenes work in these six ways.
1. Ask Them What They Want
You may have some ideas about how to celebrate Administrative Professionals’ Day, but remember — this day is all about them. A couple of weeks beforehand, ask them what they like. Try to be sly about it so whatever your gift is, it’ll be a surprise.
Some of the most popular ways to show appreciation are:
- Giving them a day off
- Taking them out to lunch
- Bringing them their favorite coffee, baked goods or food
- Playing games
- Cards and gift cards
2. Make It Personal
Whatever you do on Administrative Professionals’ Day, make it personal. Don’t just bring in doughnuts and say, “Thanks!” Take the time to write a card or have a heartfelt conversation with them about their impact on your business.
3. Cater to Them For Once
Administrative professionals typically spend all day serving other people. While they may love doing it, they could certainly use some assistance. Bring them coffee or cover the phone or front desk while they treat themselves.
As an executive or business owner, this may give you valuable insights into what they do. Even if you don’t take your administrative professionals for granted, there are probably aspects of their jobs you don’t think about.
4. Get the Whole Team Involved
Before Administrative Professionals’ Day, let the team know what you plan. Encourage them to show appreciation in their ways. They may have some creative ideas your team will love.
When you do this, you’re creating a culture of appreciation and recognition. In the long run, that could greatly impact workplace culture.
5. Recognize Them Publicly
Don’t forget to let your clients and customers know about Administrative Professionals’ Day. If your business is customer service-based, your administrative professionals may be your customers’ favorite people.
Spread the love by making social media posts, signs, and banners. Everyone who walks in can show their thanks and participate in the celebration. With praise coming from all directions, your team will know how much of an impact their jobs truly have.
6. Celebrate Administrative Professionals’ Day Year-round
This doesn’t mean you must buy your administrative assistants coffee and food daily but always keep their interests at heart. After all, administrative assistants are often the face and gatekeepers of a business. If they’re unhappy, you and your customers probably won’t be.
